The number of COVID-19 cases is growing in Ukraine. Members of the Academy of Sciences believe that it is necessary to temporarily restrict the work of restaurants and cafes, transfer employees of organizations to remote work and introduce mandatory wearing of masks
The Presidium of the Academy of Sciences of the Higher School of Ukraine appealed to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy with a demand to tighten measures in connection with the spread of the coronavirus. The corresponding appeal is posted on the website of the Presidium of the Academy of Sciences, it was signed by its President Alexander Nakonechny.
“If the current trend of a rapid increase in the number of patients continues in the second half of November (and even earlier in some of the most affected regions, in particular in the capital), a collapse of the healthcare system should inevitably be expected,” the appeal says.
The academy noted that in May-June, an average of 15 people died every day from complications caused by coronavirus, in July – 17, and in August – 28. an average of 76 deaths per day, ”the scientists said.
In this regard, the country needs strict adherence to the already introduced restrictive measures, including the wearing of protective masks in the premises and public transport, as well as the introduction of additional ones, they say.
Among the measures in circulation are the following:
“Finally, the authorities should make significant educational efforts to convince citizens that their behavioral stereotypes should, at least for the next few months, change significantly,” the appeal says. At the same time, the academics stressed that the explanatory work of the Ukrainian Ministry of Health and the activities of law enforcement agencies “turned out to be extremely ineffective.” In their opinion, this has led to a total disregard by the population of “elementary” means of protection against coronavirus infection.
According to the Ministry of Health of Ukraine, as of October 12, a total of 265,454 cases of coronavirus infection were detected in the country, of which 5,015 were lethal. Now 146 thousand people are undergoing treatment. On October 9, the country recorded a record daily increase in infected people since the beginning of the pandemic – 5804, an increase of 7.5% compared to the previous day.
On Sunday, October 11, the Ukrainian authorities decided to transfer universities to a remote format of work due to an increase in morbidity. The head of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on National Health Mikhail Radutsky explained that several outbreaks of infection, as well as deaths, were recorded among students and teachers.
In addition, schools were advised to start their holidays earlier than usual, the authorities named October 15 as the optimal date.
