In an interview with RBC, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev called on Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan to thank Russian President Vladimir Putin for saving his country.
“When Pashinyan put forward an ultimatum to all of us, when he insulted the feelings of Azerbaijanis, he should have been punished for this, and we did it. And let him thank Putin for the fact that once again Russia came to save Armenia, ”Aliyev said.
He noted that Azerbaijan has repeatedly appealed to Moscow with a request to influence Armenia, which “100 percent” depends on Russia.
During the fighting in Nagorno-Karabakh, Azerbaijan broke through the line of contact, changed the status quo, “sobering up” happened in Yerevan, Aliyev continued. Taking this into account, Russia has “a lot of tools” to convince Armenia in a short time that the only way out of the situation is to leave Karabakh, the Azerbaijani leader concluded.
In 1991, Nagorno-Karabakh, the majority of whose population were Armenians, declared independence from Azerbaijan. Baku tried to return the region by force, a war broke out. In 1994, Azerbaijan, Armenia and the unrecognized Nagorno-Karabakh Republic signed a truce. Military action is periodically resumed.
Further clashes broke out on September 27, 2020. The parties accused each other of provocations. The Azerbaijani authorities said that their army “liberated part of the occupied territories.”
On October 9, the Foreign Ministers of Armenia and Azerbaijan flew to Moscow. Negotiations mediated by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov lasted nine hours. The parties agreed to declare an armistice on October 10 at 12:00 and begin “substantive” (substantive) negotiations at the OSCE Minsk Group platform. Russia, the United States and France act as mediators in this format.
