Yerevan will be ready to recognize the independence of Nagorno-Karabakh, if it becomes clear that Baku will not follow the path of dialogue, Armen Sargsyan said
Armenia will recognize the independence of Nagorno-Karabakh if it becomes clear that Azerbaijan, which Turkey supports in the conflict over the unrecognized republic, will not go through negotiations. Armenian President Armen Sarkisian stated this in an interview with Kommersant.
“That is, the non-recognition of independence by Armenia is connected only with the fact that the Armenian side wants to resolve the issue through peaceful negotiations. This is such a tunnel, ”Sargsyan said.
According to the Armenian President, “if at the end of this tunnel there is a light – the light of a final peaceful solution to the Nagorno-Karabakh problem – then we can wait more.”
Sargsyan noted that the Supreme Council of Armenia voted for the recognition of Nagorno-Karabakh shortly before the collapse of the USSR. However, in 1994, after Baku and Yerevan agreed on a ceasefire, the Armenian side “suspended” the recognition of independence in order not to “complicate” the Minsk process to resolve the conflict.
Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said that Yerevan is considering the possibility of recognizing the independence of Nagorno-Karabakh. He noted that the issue is on the agenda of the government of the republic and the topic should be discussed by the people as well. “But this does not mean that we will definitely make such a decision. But this does not mean that we will not make such a decision, ”Pashinyan said in an interview with RBC in early October.
Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, in turn, stated that Baku under no circumstances would recognize the independence of Nagorno-Karabakh, marking the “red line”. In his words, he does not believe that someone will dare to recognize the independence of the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic. “In this case, we will immediately sever all diplomatic relations with this country,” Aliyev promised.
Fighting with heavy weapons resumed between Armenia and Azerbaijan on September 27. The countries accused each other of escalating the conflict and imposed martial law.
