LONDON, October 18. / TASS /. Feelings of tinnitus (tinnitus) and hearing loss can be rare complications of COVID-19 and require the attention of both healthcare providers and researchers. This assessment was made by a group of scientists from Imperial College London, who described a case of sudden hearing loss in a Briton who had a severe illness caused by coronavirus.
“Despite the significant amount of literature on COVID-19 and the various symptoms observed with infection with the virus, the relationship between COVID-19 and hearing is not widely discussed. Hearing loss and tinnitus are symptoms that have been noted in both COVID-19 patients and patients. influenza, however, was not highlighted, “- said in an article published by researchers this week in the British Medical Journal Case Reports.
Its authors write about the need to pay special attention to the complaints of patients with COVID-19 about the feeling of hum or ringing in the ears in order to start treatment with steroids in a timely manner, preventing hearing loss. They add that this can be a daunting task in an intensive care unit. In the case described in the article, the drugs had only a minor effect and the hearing impairment became irreversible.
The researchers found that the cause was damage to the nerve in the middle ear, and could only associate this with the patient’s illness. Scientists believe that it was this that could cause damage to the nerve, since some cells of the middle ear lining have the same receptors as the lung cells that are targeted by the coronavirus.
According to the article, there are four more cases of sudden hearing loss among people who have suffered from COVID-19 in the medical literature to date. This was the first case in the UK.
