Minsk authorities estimate losses from protests at $ 350 thousand

The damage to the budget of Minsk and city utilities against the background of protests that have not subsided for the third month amounted to $ 350 thousand, said the prosecutor of the capital of Belarus Oleg Lavrukhin. According to him, part of the losses is planned to be compensated by fines for the protesters. Today, October 18, a traditional Sunday protest action was held in Minsk.
“We can say that the city’s budget and utilities have suffered damage in the amount of about 900 thousand rubles, this is from August 9 to the present day. Certainly, part of this amount will be covered, including by those actions that qualify as criminal offenses, ”the prosecutor said in an interview with STV TV channel.
Mr. Lavrukhin clarified that the issue of compensation for damage is under special control in the prosecutor’s office of Minsk. According to him, “not a single guilty person should escape responsibility.” “Liability is not only criminal and administrative, I mean, but also civil, that is, just a material plan, one might say,” he added.
According to the prosecutor, more than $ 11 thousand have already been spent on the departure of emergency services to remove the protest symbols. “In this regard, the city prosecutor’s office has made 18 orders for this amount. Today, one can say, 10 orders have already been executed for the amount of more than 2.7 thousand rubles. (about $ 1.1 thousand). That is, the compensation is underway, ”he said.
Protests in Minsk and other cities of Belarus have continued since August 9. Today, October 18, almost 200 people were detained during the actions. In Minsk, according to media estimates, several tens of thousands of people took part in the protest march. When dispersing the protesters, the security forces used a noise grenade and gas, and also fired rubber bullets into the air.
