Over the past seven days, nearly 300,000 cases of coronavirus have been reported in the United Kingdom. This figure increased by 24% over the previous week. The number of deaths increased by 8% compared to the previous week. In total, more than 73.5 thousand people died in the UK, which is the second largest figure in Europe after Italy. The number of detected cases of infection approached 2.5 million.

In mid-December, a new COVID-19 strain was identified in the UK. As the Prime Minister of the country Boris Johnson noted, this genetic variant of the coronavirus can be 70% more infectious than the previously known one.

In the UK, a coronavirus vaccine was developed by specialists from the British-Swedish company AstraZeneca in conjunction with the University of Oxford. On December 30, the independent UK Medicines and Health Products Agency was the first in the world to approve the vaccine.
