During the next protest action in the Belarusian capital, policemen fired rubber bullets into the air, the press service of the Main Internal Affairs Directorate of the Minsk City Executive Committee told RBC
“The police fired several warning shots into the air with rubber bullets as the demonstrators threw stones at them,” the department said.
Earlier, the police reported on the detention of protesters. However, the number of detainees was not specified. According to the Viasna human rights center, 13 protesters were detained in total at 15:50. Six of them were detained in Minsk, and the rest in Svetlogorsk.
According to Tut.by, tens of thousands of people are participating in the rally in Minsk. There is no official estimate of the number of those present yet. In the center of the capital, a significant number of special equipment was noticed, including paddy wagons and water cannons. Against the background of protests in Minsk, once again, at the request of the authorities, mobile operators reduced the bandwidth of the mobile Internet.
On the eve, marches of students and women were held in the capital of Belarus. 58 people were detained on them.
Protest actions in Belarus have been going on since August 9. The reason for the protests was the official election results. Thus, according to the Central Election Commission, Alexander Lukashenko once again became president, and the single opposition candidate Svetlana Tikhanovskaya became the second. The demonstrators are demanding the resignation of the authorities, re-elections and the release of political prisoners. The security forces suppress the protests, the Belarusian authorities believe that Western countries are behind the protesters.
