MINSK, October 11. / TASS /. Sunday evening protests in Minsk continue in the format of the so-called chains of solidarity. Residents line up along the roads with white-red-white flags, the TASS correspondent reports.
Throughout the day, violent clashes between protesters and security officials took place in the city center. The OMON units almost immediately put into operation the entire set of special equipment, including water cannons, stun grenades and pepper gas. As a result, for the first time in more than two months, during which rallies continue in Belarus, protestors against the results of the August presidential elections did not manage to organize the traditional Sunday march.
Columns of people gathered in different central parts of the city were scattered by the security forces. Attempts by citizens to gather elsewhere were also invariably suppressed. The most violent clashes were noted in the area of the Pushkinskaya metro station, where at some point several thousand protesters managed to form a column. But they were eventually dispersed, many were detained.
Journalists were also detained during Sunday’s protests. According to the internet portal tut.by, 14 journalists are still in the Oktyabrskiy district police department of Minsk. In a commentary to this publication, the press secretary of the Ministry of Internal Affairs Olga Chemodanova said that she had no information about their further fate. But at the same time she expressed the hope that with them “everything will be fine.”
