The head of the Department for External Church Relations (DECR) of the Moscow Patriarchate (ROC), Metropolitan Hilarion, has called on doctors to let priests see patients with coronavirus. He announced this on the air of the TV channel “Russia 24”, RIA Novosti reports.
“It is very, very important that a priest has unhindered access to people who are now admitted to hospitals with pneumonia and other diseases caused by severe coronavirus infection, because both when a person is sick and when a person is preparing for the end of life, if he is a believer, the prayer of the Church and the presence of a priest are very important for him, ”said the Metropolitan.
He turned to doctors, heads of hospitals and hospitals where patients with coronavirus are being treated: “If you invite a priest, please admit him freely to the patient, so as not to deprive the sick person of the opportunity to receive spiritual comfort, and the dying person – the last parting words.”
So the Metropolitan commented on the information that during the second wave of the epidemic in Russia, the number of calls of priests to people who have been diagnosed with COVID-19 infection is growing.
Also, the clergyman said that the ROC has trained priests well since the beginning of the epidemic. According to him, they “are well versed in sanitary and epidemic issues, are able to fully protect themselves and those they visit.” The bishop added that when entering the departments with patients with COVID-19, the clergyman uses all means of protection.
Earlier in October, Metropolitan Hilarion advised Russians not to hesitate to get vaccinated against coronavirus in order to avoid suffering from infection. He explained that the risk of side effects from the drug is minimal, and the infection itself is worse and does not compare with the feelings of those who have become infected.
