The US National Guard prepared for the possibility of using improvised explosive devices by attackers ahead of the inauguration of US President-elect Joe Biden. It is reported by Politico.
So, the law enforcement agencies of Washington do not exclude the possibility of attacks on the Capitol. Law enforcement officials believe that the explosive devices planted during the riots last week were not isolated incidents. Moreover, the attacker has not yet been arrested. For example, FBI agents interviewed local residents for any photos or videos that could help identify a suspect.
Also, the National Guardsmen were informed that the protesters could be well armed. In this regard, Secretary of the Army Ryan McCarthy allowed the National Guards guarding the Capitol to carry deadly weapons, including Beretta M9 pistols. According to one of the soldiers, the vast majority of the soldiers are also armed with M4 rifles. Previously, they were only allowed to carry protective weapons.
At the same time, it is noted that the mission of law enforcement officers during the inauguration will be to contain riots, control traffic, coordinate parking, as well as provide medical and logistical support to local authorities.
Earlier, hundreds of armed National Guard fighters were sent to the Capitol to protect congressmen during the debate on the impeachment of the current US President Donald Trump.
The storming of the Capitol in the United States took place on January 6 during a rally of supporters of the current head of state, who do not recognize the results of the November vote, which resulted in Biden being elected president. The rallies led to clashes with the police. Five people died, dozens were detained.
