Water cannons used against protesters in Minsk

In the center of Minsk, law enforcement officers used water cannons and light grenades to disperse the protesters. The official representative of the Municipal Department of Internal Affairs of the Minsk City Executive Committee Natalya Ganusevich told RIA Novosti about this.
“Many people have gathered in the center of Minsk, the event is not authorized. Water cannons and stun grenades were used against the protesters, ”Ganusevich said.
She also clarified that 20 people had already been detained during the March of Pride protest action.
On October 11, a protest action “March of Pride” is taking place in Minsk. Before the start of the rally in the capital of Belarus, security measures were increased. Special equipment was noticed in the city center.
Belarusian media and Telegram channels started reporting the arrests before the start of the action. The Onliner Telegram channel showed a video showing how the security forces detain the protesters at the stele “Minsk – Hero City”. According to Interfax, during the clashes, protesters began throwing bottles, and security forces used pepper gas.
Protests have been going on in Belarus for more than two months after the presidential elections were held in the country on August 9. According to the results published by the CEC, the incumbent head of state Alexander Lukashenko won with over 80% of the vote. Svetlana Tikhanovskaya, his rival from the opposition, received just over 10% of votes.
Later, the opposition announced the falsification of the results and demanded to reset the voting results. Participants in mass protests in Belarus also demand a review of the election results. The country’s authorities deny allegations of fraud and accuse the West of organizing the protests. Moscow recognizes Lukashenko as the legitimate head of state, Russian President Vladimir Putin was one of the first to congratulate him on his victory.
