The United States made the right decision not to impose democracy through costly military operations and not to overthrow authoritarian regimes in other countries. The official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry Maria Zakharova said this to the Zvezda TV channel, commenting on the statement of the American Secretary of State Anthony Blinken.
“You cannot promote anything using other resources to sovereign countries without their will, official consent, without respect for the sovereignty, territorial integrity and independence of these states,” she stressed.
Zakharova invited Washington to re-read the UN charter and further be guided by it.
Earlier, Anthony Blinken, during a briefing on American foreign policy, said that the United States would stop overthrowing regimes and imposing democracy by force. He explained that, despite good intentions, past attempts by Washington to act in this way have not yielded the desired results.
The United States will now promote democracy by setting its own example and rewarding countries for democratic change, he said. Former US President Donald Trump announced in the fall of 2020 that Washington will build its peace policy from a position of strength.
